We encourage all women facing breast cancer surgery to advocate for a skin-sparing mastectomy. Here are some questions to ask your breast cancer surgeon:

• Where did you receive your surgical training?

• Are you familiar with oncoplastic techniques?

• Do you perform skin-sparing mastectomies?    If not, why not?

• Can you recommend a surgeon who does perform skin-sparing mastectomies?

• How frequently do you perform the skin-sparing mastectomy as opposed to the    traditional mastectomy?

• How many skin-sparing mastectomies have you performed?

• Is there any reason I can’t get a skin-sparing mastectomy?

• Can I see a plastic surgeon before I get the skin-sparing mastectomy?

• What will the scars on my breasts look like after I have the skin-sparing mastectomy?

• Will having a skin-sparing mastectomy affect my chances of disease recurrence?

• Am I a candidate for immediate reconstruction?

• Can I have future reconstruction?

• Who are the plastic surgeons you work with?
